Equus stage revised to guard actors from audience

September 5, 2008 by Wendy Boswell

Get this! Broadway Equus stage designer Jeff Napier raised onstage seating 11 feet in the air to keep the actors from having to endure direct eye contact with the curious audience. Apparently full-on Daniel Radcliffe nakedness is just too much for people to handle?

“If you put Harry Potter on the stage with people directly in front of him, you’re likely to get a lot of screaming young girls, particularly when he takes his kit off [gets naked],” Jeff tells the paper. “It was a very sensible decision for us raise the audience up. There’s more of a barrier.”

I admit, I probably would react VERY immaturely to seeing a naked peen – ANY peen – right there on stage. There would be quite a lot of giggling, and blushing, and staring, and some more giggling. Then again, I tend to laugh in inappropriate situations when I’m nervous (for example, my grandfather’s funeral….oy vey).
