Which death in Harry Potter did you think was unnecessary?

by Wendy on August 12th, 2008

I’m re-reading Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows for like the fourth time right now, and of course, I’m brought to tears by the tragedies at the end of the book.

NOTE: If you have not read Deathly Hallows, please stop reading!

For instance, George Weasley. I can barely read the part where he dies, killed by Bellatrix. Even now, I am choking up about it. Why did he have to die? Was it completely necessary?

What do you think? Were there unnecessary deaths in the Harry Potter series? Of these people, who do you think didn’t need to die, and why?

Aw i just love the last book!
I couldn’t believe it when Fred died ):
I dnt think it was necessacary 4 Hedwig 2 die..lol or Colin Creevey
Or Cedric Diggory..but thats really because i wanted to c more of Robert lol
But TBH I loved all the deaths ): . . it jsut makes the book more special and it showed us just how much we cared about the characters.

OK, I’ll go first! I hated for Serious Black to have died. HATED THAT. Finalyl Harry gets some family, and he’s taken away. But as for the final book, I thought the most unnecessary death was Remus Lupin. I didn’t like Fred dying, but thought Remus was overkill, no pun intended.

You have to remember that all the characters believed in the good, the right in the wizarding world, to preserve what they had been taught. They would not have sacraficed themselves if did not believe in this concept. We have grown to love each and every one of them and it is only human to be crushed when they do die, but their deaths are not forgotten and serve to be the pillars of the future generations as we read at the end of the last book.

Think of it as a parallel to today’s world, the sacrafices our military men and women endure for our freedom from terrorism and fear. Sound familiar?

Pat, your comment was gorgeous. Thank you.

And I agree with all the rest of you, especially Colleen. Fred Weasley’s death makes me cry, just thinking about it.

I do agree with KayDee, too. I thought that taking away Sirius didn’t feel right. Harry had already suffered so much!

Thank you for your kind words, but don’t get me wrong everyone. I can “cry on command” and boy I did my fair share starting with Dumbledore. When Harry was digging the grave by hand for Dobby, I know there are tear stains on the pages. I basically cried throughout that last book as we are caught up with the lives of these characters and in our own minds and hearts, we would have been there with our wands held high and ready for battle as well. So, let’s J. Rowlings her well deserved affirmations for her outstanding story and making all our lives much fuller and richer. You know if we had more stories like this that affected millions of people all over the world, just think, maybe our world wouldn’t have so many problems that it faces today.

I think that Snape not being able to anticipate his “Master’s” use of the snake was a little far fetched. Snape did not have to die; but I am a Snape fan. Also, although I will admit to it being unlikely for all of the Weasleys to make it, did it have to be Fred? Percy would have made a much more dramatic death if he died for Fred or George; brothers he had issues with all along.

    1.Fred,he shouldly not die…hiks
    2.Sirius(he even not get married yet!(bad reason…)
actually, coz he`s been in Askaban for so long,so it`s not fair for him to die
3.Remus and Tonks, will Rowling make littLe Teddy just like Harry?

I see JK’s point that all of the deaths (as far as she could see) were necessary.
I do think that it hammers home that good people die to preserve what they believe in.

This might sound kinda bad, but I think it was necessary for Hedwig to die. Just imagine trailing her around everywhere Harry went throughout Deathly Hallows. It would just be a little too crazy and she wouldn’t serve any purpose.

I expected one of the Weasley’s to die, since the family so big, but I was devastated when it was Fred. I agree with Syren- Percy would have been a (for lack of a better word) ‘better’ death.

The most unnecessary death, I think, was Collin, though I can see some reason behind it. It was a war and people die in wars. Collin had decided to fight in this one and he just ended up being a fatality. Still, I think he was a little random.

Now that I think about it, almost all of the deaths were pretty necessary. I just didn’t like who ended up dying, but I think any way she did it, I would have been mourning for the fictional characters’ deaths. It was a war, and it was inevitable that many people were going to die. Even though I cried for many of the deaths, Deathly Hallows was my favorite book in the Harry Potter series.

I didn’t think that Hedwig should I mean it’s just an owl. If she died or didn’t it wouldn’t have made a difference, but it was really sad when she died and why did Fred, Remus and Tonks have to die that was really sad.

Fred………WAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! omg, so sad. im not even an animal person, but hedwigs was pretty painful too, probably b/c NOBODY expected her to die. and colins was like hedwigs; unexpected so it hurt. it hurt ;( but, really ever death was kind of necissary, in a cruel and morbid way, to keep the story going, you know? like, the only reason fred and hedwig and colin died was to prove how devistating the war was. and omg im still in mourning.
    vive xe (cant wait!!!!!!)

I didnt want Serius to die. But i guess that made Harry stand on his own two feet more, but also had no other family left and THAT made me cry! Fred didnt need to die either! Especially when Percy just came to his senses. Fred was my fave out of all the weasleys. But imagine losing you very bust friend AND your twin at the same time!Poor george. What a let down! Snape shouldnt of died either. Or at least been alive long enough to talk to Harry so they could clear things up face to face. At least Harry has Ginny now.

I feel that J.K. Rowling had her reasons for killing the characters that she did. I would explain but it would take forever. Still I am very sad about the deaths of Remus and Tonks. I have never cried at a book before until I read the part where Remus and Tonks die. One of her reasons was that she wanted Teddy to have a similar condition as Harry. Teddy has a special object to his appearance. Teddy- metamorphmagus, Harry- scar.

Sirius black was the worst death and remus and Tonks. Not Fair

Fred definitely….it was especially painful when you think of it from the point of view of George and to know that George never really got over it..that hurts as well..
Lupin and Tonks were painful but I felt it “necessary” as in I could tell Rowling’s intentions from their deaths..it is as though the story comes full circle, beginning with the death of 2 great parents and ending with the deaths of another “soon to be” great parents…and she killed them rather than arthur weaseley…so…sadistic as it may seem, it “feels” better
Sirius Black was a painful death as well but not unnecessary cos I think Harry grew from there

I can accept Fred dying, although it is painful. I was sort of hoping it would be Percy. There were so many Weasleys all fighting that the odds were just against them. Probability states that at least one of the had to die.

However. Lupin and Tonks were unnecessary in my opinion. It ended up as a recreation of Harry’s situation instead of a better situation for Teddy. And she killed off every marauder which irked me a bit because I was hoping at least one of them would survive if Sirius couldn’t then I hoped Remus would and I’d have loved to see the growth that Remus would go through after the war in terms of accepting that despite his ‘furry problem’ he can still be happy and raise a family.

Also I was hoping that Tonks would duel Bellatrix and win. I guess in a sense revenge for Sirius and the fact that they both have Black blood would have made it an interesting scene. And JK Rowling was just incredibly cruel to Andromeda. The poor woman loses her husband, her daughter, and her son in law all to the war and she’s not even a member of the Order.

Call me a sucker for a happy ending but making Teddy the next ‘Harry’ was unnecessary in my opinion because there’s no new Voldemort so Teddy would never have the situations that would cause him to grow the way Harry did so I think he should have had his parents around.

Hedwig was tragic. I hurt for her because she was an owl and pulled into the war so innocently.

As for the deaths at the end with Colin and what not, it felt rushed. Like at the end, she decided that it was necessary to have more causalities and just listed a bunch of people as the dead. Perhaps that was just my opinion, but I think she should have described the scenes more. I wouldn’t have minded a longer book, in fact I would have preferred it. I didn’t want the book to end.

I think Hedwig’s death was most unneeded. She wasn’t “fighting for a cause”, the poor owl was just THERE! Why the hell didn’t they send her away beforehand??? Cedric’s death was equally unneeded. “Kill the spare.” Damn.
