The Top Ten Charms in Harry Potter

by Wendy on June 6th, 2008

Last week, I wrote a rundown of the Top Ten Most Important Spells in Harry Potter. This week, I’m going to make a list of most useful charms; at least, according to me!

1) Caterwauling Charm: Okay, okay - I know that the only instance of this charm was used by Death Eaters in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, but I still think it’s pretty useful. Basically, this charm sets off an shrieking alarm if you get into a certain area, which could come in handy when it’s really late at night and you just finished watching “Halloween 4″ on cable, and you’re freaked out by all the serial killers who are just itching to get into your house. Just sayin’.

2) Cheering Charm: This one is pretty self-explanatory; it makes you happy. Can you imagine how much money we could save in Prozac?

3) Cushioning Charm: Makes a nice little cushion for you wherever you are. This would be helpful at the beach when your bum is hurting from the sand.

4) Wingardium Leviosa: Levitation charm. I would have to have a cape for this one. And tights.

5) Silencio: A silencing charm. Getting tired of listening to someone? Just silencio them, baby!

6) Refilling Charm: Refills anything. Want more milkshake? How about a refill on that Starbucks triple shot white chocolate mocha? Uh huh.

7) Hair-Thickening Charm: Uh, hello? Hair Club for Men? I think you’re out of business.

8) Flying Charm: So this is bad, but I would so totally zap this one on the squirrels in my yard who insist on digging up my bulbs. Darn squirrels.

9) Engorgio: Makes things bigger. Enorgio, slice of cheesecake! Reducio, my ass!

10) Colour-Change Charm: I’d use this to change my hair color, just like Tonks. Wouldn’t that be fun?

Okay, you know the drill. Do you agree with my picks for this list? What are your favorite Harry Potter charms?

What is a charm? JKR makes it clear there is an often subtle difference between different types of magic. But never satisfactorily explains them, or at least not in the main books. Nor is she consistent, Protago is described both as a shield charm and a defensive Jinx.

‘colour change’ is Transfiguration, something Neville was not permitted to continue and told to take charms instead. I am not sure what you mean by a flying charm - everything that flew not
zapped by Wingardium Leviosa was described as ‘enchanted’ - bludgers, broomsticks, cars etc.

Top ten spells would be better and Protago should be there. Professor Snape himself said so ‘it would be better to teach’ ‘how to block hostile spells before’ etc.
