Is there a Harry Potter MMORPG coming?

by Wendy on June 4th, 2008

Rumor has it that Warner Brothers might be developing a Harry Potter MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games). Here’s what they had to say:

The notion of creating a Harry Potter multi-player online role playing game is something that we’ve been discussing at Warner Bros. for a number of years and continue to explore.

We are currently investigating the possibility of creating our own MMORPG, but unfortunately do not have any further details to share at this time.

What do you think? Good idea, bad idea? I think I would certainly have to get in on this if it ever got off the ground. Other popular MMORPGs such as City of Heroes/City of Villains, EVE Online, Lord of the Rings Online, Star Wars Galaxies, Dungeons & Dragons Online are HUGELY popular, and I think that a Harry Potter MMORPG would be an incredible way to explore the HP universe. What do you think?

there should be one i mean yeah its a good idea but, would there be enough roles for everyone? or would it just be another chat room where people explore stuff find out secrets and may sometimes get cyber-bullied?

    Yus, great idea!
And, are there enough roles? It’s a friggin school! Of course there are enough roles. I am sure that if this game comes through, it won’t only be at Hogwarts - but in the entire HP universe. Perhaps even in real places in the world, that would be awesome! Any way, so at any given time, there won’t be so and so many people actually -at- Hogwarts to make it seem unlikely. It’s perfectly doable.

The only thing I hope won’t come to pass is that if the game has the same quality as the other HP games (crappy story telling, crappy character design/physics engine, crappy graphics). The Harry Potter universe is a PERFECT ground for creating fantastic games, it’s just that most of the game designers of the HP games up until now has been surprisingly untalented which is really sad.

I think it would be excellant idea. If they get the right people behind it and designers. I played Pirates of the Carribean, for all the hype it took too long to load and very cruddy graphics. Far as Cyber Bullying is why they have prefects at the school monitoring such. Plus not to mention losing house points which could make their relations with their house change and privealages to boot. Usually cyber bullies don’t last long cause why hang with them if all they do is harass people around him. Plus this could be a mmorpg where based on roleplay than point and beat up stats. I can see it now going to each teacher and they give you a specific job. Like helping Hagrid with groundskeeping by cleaning up the quidditch field, Professor Mogonagal, ask you to transform troublesome candles around the castle that got away. For those that like pvp action can join the deatheaters or Dumbdore’s army for quests and action they like. Each quest they do influences not only Hogwarts, but the world around them. Then the really fun stuff is attending classes which go around the clock for those that live in different time zones. After so many they advance a year providing they can pass a test. Then after they get to the wizard adult age they have to go outside Hogwarts into the real wizard world. Finding a job and so forth to earn money and sponsor a child of their own for attending Hogwarts. The possiblities are endless.

I think it’s a great idea. The previous games have flopped because simply playing out the movie is boring. The only way to effectively make a HP game is through an MMORPG because it makes you one student in a school which is like the books. There are endless possibilities of ways to level up, such as learning new spells, performing tasks, etc. The fact that it’s a school with grade levels lends itself well to gaining experience and advancing. For those who are familiar with WOW, you start out in one world and when you reach a certain level you go through a portal to another. In the same way in a HP MMO, you could start as a student, slowly progress in level and grade, until you graduate, when you enter the rest of the world. If the developers work closely with Rowling, they can create a game that gives fans what they have wanted ever since the series was completed, instead of just remakes of the books.

yup that would be fun being a wizard myself except that its just virtual. I hope they got the avatar making part it would be soo cool. But the problem is at the leveling part…seven years..levels wonder how they would fix that part

I think that an MMO is a GREAT idea. Like what others were saying, I think you could customize your character… like Phantasy Star Online… you could go through school and learn spells through school, search them in the library, and after so many levels or grades join DA. That way, you could eventually unlock every spell in the books, movies and games and not be restricted to the 3-6 spells like in previous console games. You could even learn dark spells through influence by the “bad crew” or learn them yourselves. You could play Quidditch, go to Hogsmeade… all the places, even the Forest of Dean and Godric’s Hollow. Grow your arsenal, your friends, your age and experience, and explore the whole Harry Potter World!! GO NERDZ!!!

I think that it will be great if they get good designers and staff. Cyber Bullying, solution prefects. And if people aint happy with there rank/position in the game then they will work harder. Pirates of The Carribean was crud with graphics and to much of the film involvement.Lots of people would love a Hogwarts Online or wateva it will be called. Whats annoying is that people keep putting Warner Bros have been discussing it. Warner said that so if it fails they can say that why we discussed it. Anyone who likes the books, and films like me will wait for it and go on it. People who like Harry Potter full stop(magic world, hogwarts, spells, etc.) wil want it. If you like Harry Potter and imagine yourself there then that would be your chance to see what would happen. I think yes, and also that it would sell out.

    Anyone played Fable?

    1. Make the gameplay/graphics/mood of the coming Harry Potter MMORPG like Fable’s.

    2. ??????

    3. PROFIT!

(My point, let Lionhead Studios design the game, and it’ll be awesome. Play Fable and you’ll know what I mean.)

You know, you dont need things like you, youre harry.you, your ron. you can make a username then go to hogwarts and interact with others during lessons or club activities and make friends, rivals, or clubs(wizard chess, gobstones, dueling, etc)play quidditch(interaction)(you get to be captain as you get better and only 7 people from each house can play to let more people play you have lots of servers)and have classes and duel and learn LOTS AND LOTS of spells to use

i think it is a great idea, the only problem is the char avalible. You only have so many main charaters you’ll have alot of the same people running around then again they can find their way around it, possibly you are no one important juss someone placed in a house. all in all hp is amazing and this would draw more attention to the books and movies and just really be a great adition to the greatest idea ever

  • Steven

It would be a great game.
Technically it wouldn’t be Harry Potter though, the only way this would be good is if you just play a wizard at hogwarts, doing stuff, but doing these kind of quests and learning spells and stuff would be a blast.

  • Will there be video games that explore worlds beyond Deathly Hallows? Maybe

I’ve been thinking about a HP MMORPG long before the books where even finished (and I’m pretty sure I wasn’t the only one).
The reason (I think) why WB has said anything about them thinking about it before now is really simle; they wated to wait until all the books have been completed and thus having even more resources to draw from.
A HP MMORPG is going to be particulary difficult to make, why? Because the HP world itself is very very complex.
As much as I want them to hurry up and make it I know that it will take years before it will be (or if) available.
However, I see a huge potential about the entire project. Like the ability to take on professions (many current MMORPGs have it already) on a new level; Wand makers, tailoring, bookshop owners, invent new sweets, work for the Ministry of Magic in various departments, sell illigal goods (dark items etc), Gringots banker? =P
I mean, there’s endless possibilities here. So I think for those who doesn’t like to be fighting all the time (or at all) will find that there’s plenty to do elsewhere.
As I’m imagining it, the game should start with your character being accepted to Hogwarts, or other magic schools (depending on your home location you’ve chosen). Then you’ll take the train or whatever the transport is to get there. You’ll be sorted (I think that’s a Hogwarts only thing) into houses. After all that (I see that as a kind of intro) you’ll start of with classes, homework, activities within the school that gives you experience and new abilities + friends/foes.
After 3 years (game-time) or after you reach a certain level you graduate (hopefully? =)) and you have the whole world to explore. By this time you should also be familiar with the games basic controls, settings and know how to move around.
I’d really like to see some good story-driven quests as well as the ability for players to make quest/requests for different tasks they want to achieve that also gives rewards (xp, gold, items etc).
Oh well, just keep in mind that this is MY thoughts of the game and not official! (just to make that clear :)).
But I’ll certainly will keep an eye (or as many as I can spare) for more news about the HP MMORPG. If done right, it’ll be a huge success!

It is totally possible. My boyfriend doesn’t think so but I could tell you exactly how everything would go.
    * Exp based. You go up a year when you level up
*Fully designable characters. You can’t have the
    same characters running around.
*New story. I think everyone is sick of the whole lets do exactly the same thing Harry Potter did. I don’t know about you but I want to start my own character and my own storyline.
*Characters age (11-17 is a big difference)
    *Mini-games (getting to Hogwarts Express)
*Classes that you can go to when ever you feel like it. Your score will increase more as you go to the class.
    * You can only go to your own common room
*Spells that you learn as time goes on
*Quest to complete and bad guys to battle will keep it interesting for everyone.

    Yay or Nay?

This would be a great idea and yet *another* way JK Rowling can increase her huge stash of monies via the Harry Potter franchise. I too have played Pirates of the Caribbean Online (newbie to MMORPG) but feel like with the same ideas of questing, quidditch, classes spells and stuff, it can be good. All original characters would be nice, with NO ties to actual characters (i.e., you can’t be Harry’s *distant* cousin, Billy Bob Potter…haha) Pirates has a way for you to create 4 characters (which would be nice in Potter world so you can test out the different houses… *glee*).
Hmm, I’m waiting Warner Bros. Show me what ya got.

    Hogwarts Online MMORPG in development!

Wrong. Ok, im so much into HP and that the problem. Im not the only one!!! Imagine, millions of people playing it, siting in classroom, making skills- MAJOR LAGGS i tell ya. MAJOR LAGGS.!!!
Well, if you make like 10 servers and in each u let in like only few thousands, than its ok. It would still lagg a little, but…

  • Lordie
    Oct 20, 2008 at 05:11

There will always be lag issues depending on:
    - Servers
    - Users Internet connections
    - Users hardware
    - The graphic engine of the game
    is just a few issues.

There are ways to reduce lag, f.ex if you went to a class, you’ll be loaded into a different area when you go through the door. Each class can only have x number of students (let’s say 10-20). By doing that, the chances of lag is not that high.

I would really love a harry potter game online, where youre free to walk in the castle and outside, learn skills and things, play quidditch and stuff. Something like Guild Wars, free to walk and do whatever you want.
