Did JK Rowling violate her own standards?

by Wendy on May 12th, 2008

I just came across a very interesting article by the author of Ender’s Game. In the article, titled JK Rowling, the Lexicon, and Oz he states that JK Rowling, currently suing Steven Vander Ark and the Harry Potter Lexicon, has herself been guilty of creative piracy. Here are the main points he makes:

  • Rowling lifted the main points of her plot from the novel, Ender’s Game, along with other novels.
  • Rowling is a hypocrite for getting upset about the Harry Potter Lexicon when her own novels have borrowed plots and characters.
  • The article’s author puts forth the premise that this lawsuit is more about respect in the eyes of other authors, rather than a full-scale copyright infringement.

I think I agree with some of his points; not having read the novel “Ender’s Game”, I can’t really speak to that. Read the article and then come back and tell us what you think: is JK Rowling a literary genius? Or is she just another copycat? Discuss!

sorry about that. moving on. you better prepare yourself, Mr. Orson Scott Card, because im gonna melt you to a puddle on the floor. here we go.

in Ender’s Game, the planet is invaded by aliens. does that mean HG Wells (author of war of the worlds) should be turning over in his grave b/c Orson Scott Card “stole” his precious idea???

andrew, the main character in ender’s game, is bullied and beat up by his older brother. well that means Cynthia Voight is a cheater! she stole that idea! in her Tillerman Family Series, one of the main characters is beaten up. shame on you, ms voight!

ender’s game takes place in the future. oh my, i smell a copy cat! the novel 1984 is set in the future too!

does this mean these authors, cynthia voight, george orwell, and HG wells are stealing? no, acutally, you could say that Orson Scott Card is stealing THEIR work.

you tosspot (in the well chosen words of Ton) All this guy is trying to do is shift the deserving spot light off Jo and onto himself so we would read his book instead.

    you tosspot
vive xe. and you hit me really hard today. i didnt give you permission to bruise!

that’s exactly what my mum a few weeks ago when j.k was going through the trial! she said how cn she blame someone else just for making ahp enclyclopedia and that she got the plot from some play.!!

Many authors get an insperation from other authors…as a budding writer my self I’ve often gottne insperation from Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Narnia, Inheritance Series, and many more. As long as Ms. Rowling didnt steal the exact characteristics of the other author’s work it is not plagiarism!!! If that was the case half the books in the world have some ties to other books!!! It’s only natural for authors to get inspired and use other ideas of others authors!!! They are ONLY HUMAN, even if they have a extreamly special gift….

No offense to Mr. Orson Scott Card, but the plot line of his story has very little in common with Harry Potter. Yes, there are schools for “special” children in both novels. And yes, both main characters are males and both have firends of boths sexes. However, the similarities end there. Ender’s Game is a futuristic novel based around an alien invasion and a military space academy for young children. Harry Potter is an acedemy for pre-teen wizards who are learning how to use magic and fighting evil. The plot line have VERY little in common.

although i have never read the book, good point taylor. this guy can’t blame rowling for “stealing” his idea. these ideas have been out there for who knows how long and he’s just being a hypocrite for saying she used his ideas even though he used other people’s ideas. he’s just being an idiot. now i will never read that book just because the author is a loser.

vive xe (sorry- i’m really not that strong lol)

Okay, I’m not sure if anyone bothered to go read the article that Card wrote, but he was being fascecious. By describing the plot to Ender’s Game vaguely, there can be many similarities, but he doesn’t actually feel like he was plagiarized in any way. The author of this blog post misunderstood that, and it’s kind of embarrassing how everyone posting here took the author’s word for it and didn’t read the article before discussing.

Ultimately, Card was trying to emphasize that Rowling isn’t acting in the true spirit of a fiction author - that everyone borrows ideas, including Rowling herself. He is finds her lawsuit ridiculous and hypocritical, especially since the lexicon author made no pretense of making up these terms himself.

But don’t take my word for it - go read the article yourself. :)
