Readers: What made you start reading the Harry Potter books?
I would love to hear your stories about what, exactly, made you start reading the Harry Potter books. I’ll start. :>) Basically, I got into them because my kids were into them. Now I’m more of a fan than they are! I remember wondering to myself “what’s all the fuss about” and fully expected to be let down. However, once I started reading I was HOOKED, and pretty much never stopped being hooked!
Okay, so that’s my semi-boring story. What’s yours? Let’s hear in the comments!

Hi, my introduction to Harry Potter was rather strange. At first I had a course about Harry Potter in Uni during my literature studies many years ago (it was just before the 3rd or 4th book came out). I read the first book and was not very impressed at all. Honestly I can not remember why, but I blame the German translation, which has always been awful.
Many years later it happened that again and again I met girls who told me how much they love Allan Rickman as Snape and that he is the subject of their dreams and I got curious and thought I should check this out. I caught half of the second film on tv and was mildly entertained (actually I think I was immediately hooked and just didn’t know it at the time) I started reading fan fiction, which is odd considering I had no clue what it was all about, didn’t know half the characters and what everyone was talking about. Then I quickly watched the other films and even though I did not think they were much good I was quickly obsessed with many of the characters and started getting the books as well and for over a year now I am as obsessed with Harry Potter as I have not been with anything in a long time.

My reason for falling into the Potter web,was my daughter, she loved the first movie, and I didn’t watch it until it came out on video(yes video),and my niece and nephew was completely into this world, right along with my daughter. Well of course,I had decided after seeing the first movie,I had to read the books(my daughter had gotten 2-4 for Christmas)but like an idiot I didn’t read the first book, because I thought,oh well I have seen the movie! Boy was I wrong! After opeing the second book I was hooked. And honestly I didn’t get around to reading book 1 until after book 5 had come out,how lame am I?!!! Well now,I have read and re-read the books,my family thinks I am utterly insane, but the books are so good, and I find more things to think about everytime I read them. I have become the Harry Potter expert in our home, the kids won’t read the books until the movies are done, but of course they ask me everything about them! But I have to say the best part of the whole Harry Potter world,is the effect it has had on my family, from the books to the movies,it is a great family time for us,from grandparents to uncle, aunt, niece and nephew. We all go the movies, and when a Harry Potter movie is on tv,it is litterally on every tv in my house, because everyone watches them over and over! It is a great way for a single mom to bond with her daughter, even though that daughter is almost 16 now,but we still have Harry Potter movie marathos, and we discuss the books. Now if she would just read them herself,to be able to appreciate them as much as I do. Oh and did I forget to tell you,I am 35 years old,and yes I am addicted to the Potter world, and very proud of it!

I was critical of the Harry Potter books to start with as well, thinking they were a rip off of The Worst Witch and Simon the Sorceror. But I have a rule not to judge something until I’ve tried it for myself. So I watched the first movie and was immediately captivated by the world JK had invented. I eventually bought the first two movies together on DVD and then decided to read the first book as well, so I bought a box set with the first five books in it and read them all together. Luckily, by the time I had finished the third movie and the Half-Blood prince had just come out because I was hooked.
If I have even a percent of the success that JK has had with my book, I would be ecstatic. To find out more, please visit my site: http://www.trollking.co.uk

Hm.
I had the first book shipped to me, via an aunt that was holiday-ing in England. At first I thought that the book was slightly enjoyable, then when I read further, nobody could capture my attention for longer than it took to turn the page. Almost failed a few school subjects because I was too busy reading the book for the 10th time =P.
The second book was sent over as a present from relations in the US, and I ended up having someone read it to me, (I’m not ashamed to admit that the chance of Harry dying at the end of CoS, scared even me, I was in high school at the time =P). By the time the seventh book rolled around, I had entered into several forums and chat rooms, debating on topics relating to Harry Potter, when I finally found fan fiction, *sighs* it helps all us HP fans keep in touch with the HP universe every day. I have been hooked for so many years, I’ve lost count, and I can’t contemplate my life without it. If I’m not careful, I could be committed for trying to talk to snakes… =D

Well i cant actually remember when i started to read the books. i actually think i went to see the 1st movie first! The ad for the movie i suppose got me hooked to go and see it. after coming out of the movie i didn’t think of hitting the book straight away! Ii was when i was given the book set of the first four that i really started to get into the books and think wow! The whole idea of another magicaly brillant world had me hooked and i found myself reading all four! I always read the book before a movie comes out and this summer i read all 7 books again..taking my time this time round and i actually found out things that i could have missed out when rushing to the end of the last book! It refreshed my memory aswell to re-read them and complete the puzzle! Magiclal, Magical books! will always be re-read! i am actualy reading them again and im on the 5th book..brillant! I’ve read the 6th and 7th book twice and i’e lost count on the rest! 7th by far my favourite..talk abou CRYING so much over fictional characters but i suppose when you see them in the cinema, they then become your image of the character when reading the book! Thank you J.K Rowling!!! =]

I had my first contact with Harry Potter after saw the first movie, in a video tape. Few time later, the second movie came out and I almost died when my brother went see the movie and I couldn’t.
In that summer, I went pass 2 weeks in Algarve, where I found a neighbour that I didn’t used to talk much. He started to talk about hippogriffs ( didn’t know what they are back then ), and I discovered that Harry Potter was a book collection.
I changed school in the next september. I used to go the library after classes and in one afternoon, I found the Harry Potter books.
I read the third first, because I already knew the stories of the first two. I loved the third book and soon I started to read the fourth. I was already a big, big, BIG fan of Harry Potter when the fifth came out and luckly, a friend lend me.
I was COMPLETELY addicted to Harry Potter!
Then, the sixth came out and I got desperate because I live in Portugal, so I had to wait THREE months to read it (and my parents took me book because I didn’t study, the only things I did was read )
The same happened with this last one, that I received last christmas and I read it in two days.
JK Rowling became my favourite writer.

Hey!! I began reading Harry Potter over spring break when I was in first grade. I finished the first one so fast that my grandma bought me the next two immediatly. Ever since Harry Potter has been one of my favorite stories ever told. I eagerly waited for the arrival of all of the new books and i cannot wait for the movies!! I think it is especially great for my generation because we were the ones who learned to love reading because of Harry Potter. For many of us, Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone was the first real chapter book we had ever read. What a great treat to try reading something like a chapter book for the first time and discover such a magical place!

Wellll……I remember when I was in 4th grade, the first HP movie had just come out. My teacher was crazy about the books (and the movie, of course) so I’m guessing she got into a huge Harry Potter spirit because about once a week or so she would make the whole class sit on a rug and she would read the books aloud to us. Man, I became so fascinated with the stories!!!!! Ever since then I continued to read HP…right up until this summer, going into 11th grade! I’ve read, re-read, and re-read again the books (I just started re-re-reading the third one haha) They’re just so freakin awesome! …I’m a little obsessed….but who isn’t????

I think my aunt (who was living in England when the books first came out) must have told us about the books. I started reading the first when I was in first grade, and stopped two chapters from the end because I got absolutely terrified. When the movie was about to come out, my mom read it aloud to me and my cousins, and I was hooked! Although, I made a mistake of reading the first chapter of the fourth book when I was younger before I got to it in the right order and for years thought that Voldemort lived on the chair in my bedroom and would try to kill me everynight!

I was 9-years-old when my g-ma bought me the 1st book. i loved it so my family just kept on buying. i sometmes think that the movies are a rip-off though (no complimates on the hot guys in the movies) only because the movies leave out the important things from the books.
