Secrets behind Harry Potter revealed

Well, probably not the secrets I’m hoping for (like who will die in Hallows!) but interesting nonetheless:

Computer technology used to create special effects for the Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings films will be explained at Cheltenham’s Science Fair.

The idea behind the presentation is to engage with young people who may go on to study IT at university.

Andrew Fitzgibbon, senior researcher at Microsoft Research, will demonstrate how 3D effects are created.

He will be joined by Andrew Daffy, whose work includes the James Bond opening titles and BBC 2 tags.

Andrew Daffy will illustrate how he uses technology to “bend” audiences’ perception of what they are watching.

“Helping youngsters understand that an interest in computers can lead to all sorts of exciting career opportunities is key,” said Adrian Walmsley, British Computer Society engineering and technology forum manager.

“The profession is trying to reverse the current trend in the declining numbers of students studying IT at university,” he added.
