Chapter One: The Boy Who Lived
In the begining of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, JK Rowling describes The Dursleys. “Mr. Dursley was a big, beefy man with hardly any neck, and a large mustache.” When I heard this, I pictured a sheriff. Mrs. Dursley is, what I picture, a giraffe. I wonder why Rowling decided to pick these characters with these appearances. I mean, does she want us to hate them right off? Or is it because Harry is such a scrawny little guy, she wanted him to stick out like a sore thumb? I think that the latter is the more accurate one.
The next day, Mr. Dursley goes off to work. When he leaves, he notices a cat reading a map…well, we all know who that is! The cat is a tabby with markings around it’s eyes like glasses. Now, this is very interesting because the cat is really a human, but how could Rowling come up with the idea of having the cat have ‘glasses?’ This cat is throughout the whole chapter, and turns out to be a Professor Mirvena McGonngal; a Professor at Hogwarts.
It goes on to Mr. Dursley sitting in his living room watching the news, remembering what happend when he was downtown at work. People whispering You-Know-Who is finally dead, about the owls, and…the Potters? He asked his wife about it, which was a mistake on his part. Mrs. Dursley hated her sister, Lily Evens-Potter. She believed her sister married a good for nothing man named James and hated her even more than she did before. Nothing special about this, besides the fact that her sister was a witch.
When they went to bed, Mrs. Dursley mad and Mr. Dursley worried, a man walked down the street. He put out all of the lights on that street and saw the cat. He didn’t look at her, but said hello to Professor McGonagal. The man is Albus Dumbldore, headmaster of Hogwarts. He reminds me of a priest. He is quiet, gentle, and as sweet as all get out.
Soon after the two professors had a discussion, a man…no - a giant appeared in the sky on a motorcycle. This fellow is named Hagrid. He was carrying a child in his hands, a kitten compared to him. Soon, everyone will get to know Harry Potter, the boy who lived.
